Our fight today could be your fight tomorrow

We live in Dovenby village, 65 houses and two farms 2 miles from Cockermouth in West Cumbria.


In 1998 Msport bought the adjacent parkland and mansion called Dovenby Hall Estate.  They make rally cars and have been good(ish) neighbours until last year when they applied for planning permission to build a 24 hour factory to make cars and an adjacent race car testing track.


Allerdale Borough Council’s Local Plan guides how planning applications should be decided. There were over 200 objections to the development; ancient woodland destroyed, wildlife disturbed, historic setting of listed building irreversibly changed, noise.


Noise from race cars was feared as the greatest threat. Excessive noise pollution is noise nuisance.


The planning process is supposed to apply policies of The Local Plan which are expected to protect the interests of the community.  However government National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) has allows apparently contradictory interests.  Quotes from the foreword:


We consider that this development is not sustainable when weighed against the disruption to us and to our environment.  So we take ACTION.

A dedicated, committed, skilled  and active group are essential for a major project of challenging a Local Authority, a multi-millionaire and a planning decision in its lawfulness.  It is rare to succeed and the financial risk is significant so it takes a special group of people to recognise how wrong it is to impose a race car test track and 24 hour factory on us.

“Our natural environment is essential to our wellbeing ...” States the Minister in the NPPF.  We agreed and decided to act on that sentiment.  Our rural tranquility should not be sacrificed for the economic benefit of a multi millionaire.  We renovated our near derelict house and created a garden that planners recognise is a community asset.  We will not give
